SPECIAL EVENT: ROCK'N'ROLL (1959)

  • 30 Hargraves Street Castlemaine Australia (map)

DIRECTOR: Lee Robinson

DURATION: 1:20

Join us in the cinema for the re-premiere of this rare Australian concert film, thought to have been lost forever, until now.

Filmed, released, tragically lost and miraculously rediscovered, Rock 'n' Roll is Australia's – and one of the world's – oldest surviving concert films.

Produced in 1959, a few years after the titular genre burst onto the world stage, Lee Robinson's concert film captures a pivotal moment in the Australian music scene through live performances by Johnny O'Keefe, The Delltones, and Cole Joye.

Surviving only in the form of a short fragment familiar to many as part of the introduction to ABC's Rage, the feature-length film was mostly thought to have been lost forever. However, following the film's recent rediscovery and digitisation, Rock 'n' Roll now stands as a time capsule of 1950s Australian youth culture and the world's oldest surviving concert film of its genre.
