STORY

Some Happy Day is a story about Tina, a homeless woman in desperate search of a better life who meets Frances, a social worker with troubles of her own. Over a single day their lives interweave, revealing unsettling connections that lead to change and redemption. Some Happy Day is an Australian indie feature film written, directed and produced by Catherine Hill. This film was made with and in the community that the story is set. Sixty actors, sixty crew and over one hundred and fifty community supporters.

INSPIRATION

Stories define who we are, they are society’s mirror. It is often challenging when we see ourselves reflected back. But this reflection catalyses change and shapes our culture. Director Catherine Hill has worked with marginalised and often street homeless men and women for over two decades and it was their stories that inspired her to make this film.

“As a case worker you quickly learn that the experience of trauma is a constant backstory. And you are blown away by the resilience and strength of those you are privileged to work with.”

We need to see the lives of others to understand our own lives.

GOAL
All of us have seen people sleeping rough, or lugging the ubiquitous striped carry bags, or pushing shopping trolleys stacked high with blankets and precious belongings. We all know about homelessness but we need to humanise it. When we empathise we connect deeply, we invest, we act. And this is why Story is so powerful.

We want Some Happy Day, through the story of Tina, to provoke conversation and more action that works towards addressing the issues of homelessness. Those actions can be small; a change of attitude as you walk past someone sitting in a shell of bedding on the street, a conversation with a friend, donating to a service. Or they can be life changing; studying social work, volunteering, becoming an advocate, an educator, a politician.

We can make change but it requires action. We want Some Happy Day to excite people to take action now.
